A Better Choice of Topcoat for Epoxy Zinc-Rich Primer in Four Different Situations

For the current heavy anticorrosion, due to better chemical anticorrosive performance, many schemes use epoxy zinc-rich primer. Choosing a good matching topcoat for epoxy zinc-rich primer is an important issue in corrosion prevention for achieving good anticorrosive effects. In different occasions with different environments, which topcoat is more suitable for use with epoxy zinc-rich primer? Today, let's take a look at which topcoats should be used with epoxy zinc-rich primer in several such scenarios.

The environment where epoxy zinc-rich primer is needed is generally highly corrosive, such as C3C4 environment (coastal, industrial atmosphere environment), bridge water part, port equipment, immersed damp parts, storage tanks, etc. The topcoat also needs to be a heavy-duty anticorrosive type, and ordinary anticorrosive paints such as alkyd acid cannot be used.

1. The selection of topcoat for epoxy zinc-rich primer in C3c4 atmospheric environment should be based on the specific degree of corrosion. If the corrosion is not very serious and decorative effect is required, acrylic polyurethane topcoat can be used, which is generally used outdoors. If it is indoors, epoxy topcoat can be used, but note that epoxy topcoat cannot be used outdoors, which is prone to yellowing and powdering under the sun. If the corrosion is severe, fluorocarbon topcoat with strong anticorrosive performance should be chosen.

2. The use of epoxy zinc-rich primer for bridge steel structures and immersed wet steel structures is basically the same. The part above the bridge deck actually belongs to general atmospheric environment, and alkyd acid paint can even meet the requirement without using epoxy zinc-rich primer.

Acrylic polyurethane topcoat can be used in places with severe coastal or industrial atmospheric corrosion. As for the areas below the bridge deck that are easy to come into contact with water or immerse, chlorinated rubber topcoat or thick slurry epoxy coal tar paint can be used.

Both of these heavy-duty anticorrosive paints, except for the thick slurry type epoxy coal tar paint, can be used for anticorrosion of port machinery and equipment.

3. For the anticorrosion of storage tanks with epoxy zinc-rich primer, it mainly depends on the substances stored. mostly used for oil storage, so special oil-resistant and electrostatic conductive topcoat is needed to match with epoxy zinc-rich primer for anticorrosion.

The external wall anticorrosion of storage tanks is also determined based on the position of the tank. Chlorinated rubber paint can be used for damp places, and acrylic polyurethane paint can be used for weather resistance.

These are the several topcoats that can be used in conjunction with epoxy zinc-rich primer, and the selection should be based on the environment. Generally, iron oxide intermediate coat is used for the intermediate coat.
