Epoxy zinc-rich primer is a primer with relatively good comprehensive anti-corrosion performance, mainly used on steel structures and metal surfaces. Epoxy zinc-rich primer has strong corrosion resistance and good adhesion, and is often used as a primer choice in heavy anti-corrosion construction.
As a commonly used anti-corrosion primer, epoxy zinc-rich primer is also a paint that often encounters problems during construction. Most of these problems are related to the treatment of metal surfaces. Let's look at the requirements and common rust removal methods of epoxy zinc-rich primer substrates.
According to international standards, the rust removal requirements of epoxy zinc-rich primer are Sweden standard Sa2.5 level or St3 level.
Epoxy zinc-rich primer is a paint with relatively high requirements for substrate treatment among all paints. Poor substrate treatment will seriously affect the adhesion of epoxy zinc-rich primer. If the adhesion of the paint is found to be poor, it should be considered whether the substrate treatment is not in place.
Before the construction of epoxy zinc rich primer on steel structures and metal surfaces, the substrate should generally be treated to remove oil stains, dust, rust, and unevenness. Water or solvent can be used to remove surface oil and dust, and then polish and derust to level the surface. The surface of the steel should be clean, flat, and free of rust.
The commonly used rust removal methods in paint construction are manual rust removal and sandblasting rust removal. Manual rust removal includes sandpaper and grinding wheel polishing, and sandblasting rust removal includes jet and throwing rust removal. These two methods have their own requirements for rust removal grade, but the surface effect is similar. Manual rust removal needs to reach St3 level (more thorough), and sandblasting rust removal needs to reach Sa2.5 level (very thorough).
Sa2.5 and St3 both require that there is no visible rust, oil stains, oxide scale, etc. on the metal surface. For sandblasting rust removal, the residue should only be slight spots or stripe-shaped light marks. For manual rust removal, the metal surface should have a metallic luster.
Epoxy zinc-rich primer has higher requirements for substrate rust removal. Strict treatment of the substrate is required before construction. Basically, it can be said that paint peeling, bubbling, and uneven paint film are all due to poor substrate treatment, so special attention should be paid to it.
