Nowadays, epoxy zinc-rich primer is widely used in heavy-duty anti-corrosion projects due to its excellent chemical anti-corrosion performance. In order to achieve the best anti-corrosion effect, it is essential to choose a suitable topcoat for the epoxy zinc-rich primer. Different environments require different topcoats. Today, we will take a look at which topcoats should be used with epoxy zinc-rich primer in different situations.
The environments that require the use of epoxy zinc-rich primer are usually heavily corroded, such as C3C4 environment (coastal, industrial atmospheric environment), the water part of bridges, port equipment, wet areas, storage tanks, and so on. The topcoat should also be of heavy-duty anti-corrosion type, and ordinary anti-corrosive paints such as alcohol and acid cannot be used.
In the C3C4 atmosphere, the specific degree of corrosion should be considered when choosing the topcoat for epoxy zinc-rich primer. If the corrosion is not severe and decorative effect is desired, acrylic polyurethane topcoat can be used, which is generally applied in outdoor environments. If it is indoor, epoxy topcoat can be used, but attention should be paid to the fact that epoxy topcoat cannot be used in outdoor areas as it may turn yellow and powder when exposed to sunlight. For severe corrosion, fluorocarbon topcoat can be used, which has excellent anti-corrosion performance.
Bridges and immersed steel structures use epoxy zinc-rich primer similarly. The upper part of the bridge is actually a general atmospheric environment, and epoxy zinc-rich primer is not necessary to be used. Alcohol and acid paint may also be applicable. If it is a heavily corroded area such as coastal or industrial atmosphere, acrylic polyurethane topcoat can be used. For the area below the bridge that is easily exposed to or immersed in water, chloride butyl rubber topcoat or thick slurry-type epoxy coal tar pitch paint can be used.
Except for the thick slurry-type epoxy coal tar pitch paint, the other two heavy-duty anti-corrosion paints can be used for corrosion protection of port machinery and equipment.
For storage tanks and other anti-corrosion applications with epoxy zinc-rich primer, the choice of topcoat is mainly based on the material stored. It is mostly used for storing oil, so a special oil-resistant and static-conductive topcoat must be used in combination with epoxy zinc-rich primer for anti-corrosion purposes.
The anti-corrosion of the outer wall of storage tanks is also based on the placement of the storage tank. Chlorinated rubber paint should be used for wet areas, while acrylic polyurethane paint should be used for weather-resistant areas, etc.
The topcoats that match epoxy zinc-rich primer are generally these few types, and the intermediate coating is usually cloud iron intermediate coating.
