As a primer, epoxy zinc-rich primer often appears in better anti-corrosion solutions, and it has good corrosion resistance and adhesion, mainly applied to steel structures. Because epoxy zinc-rich primer has good adhesion, some customers ask us whether it can be sprayed on stainless steel. Today we will analyze what kind of anti-corrosion paint is more suitable for stainless steel.
Although epoxy zinc-rich primer has good adhesion, it is mainly used on steel after sandblasting, and the surface of the steel should reach Sa2.5 level of grinding and roughness of 30-75μm.
The surface of stainless steel is smoother and has poor adhesion, making it difficult for epoxy zinc-rich primer to adhere to it. Moreover, the anti-corrosion function of epoxy rich zinc mainly relies on the electrochemical reaction of zinc powder. The chemical reaction between zinc powder and stainless steel will instead destroy the anti-corrosion ability of stainless steel itself.
Therefore, epoxy zinc-rich primer is not suitable for spraying on stainless steel.
For smooth metal substrates like stainless steel, phosphating treatment or phosphating primer should be used first, and then a paint with good adhesion should be sprayed. A common choice is epoxy zinc yellow primer.
Phosphating treatment is to use phosphating solution such as phosphoric acid to passivate the surface of the substrate. A relatively rough film will be formed on the surface of stainless steel to increase the roughness of the substrate and the adhesion with the paint. After the phosphating treatment, two coats of epoxy zinc yellow primer are applied with a dry film thickness of 40μm and each square meter is about 105g.
After the primer is applied, epoxy iron intermediate paint is selected for the middle paint, and chlorinated rubber paint, polyurethane paint, fluorocarbon finish paint, etc. are selected for the surface paint according to the usage environment.
Smooth metals such as stainless steel and aluminum alloy generally use phosphating treatment and zinc yellow primer to greatly increase the adhesion between the primer and the substrate to prevent the paint film from falling off.
